The Complete Ultralight Backpacking Pack List for 2026 (Base Weight Under 10 lbs)

Getting your base weight under 10 lbs (around 4.5 kg) is the traditional cutoff for “ultralight” in r/Ultralight taxonomy. It is not a magic number, but it is a useful one: hit it and you will notice the difference on day three of a twenty-mile day. This is the list that gets you there in 2026 without a five-figure gear closet or buying anything you do not actually need.

Weights below are manufacturer-published specs as of writing. Real-world weights vary by size, generation, and how much your tent stakes have rolled around in your pack. Cross-check before you buy. Currency is USD, and all weights are listed in grams and ounces.

Quick definitions.Base weight is everything you carry minus consumables (food, water, fuel) and what you wear or hold (worn weight, trekking poles). Skin-out weight is everything including consumables and worn items. When you read “sub-10” on Reddit, that is almost always base weight.

One more framing note. The categories below are roughly ordered by weight contribution, not by how important they feel. If you only have an hour to optimize your kit, spend it on the Big Three. If you only have ten minutes, spend it weighing your first-aid kit and your toiletries on a kitchen scale: those two bags routinely come in at 300 to 500 g over what people guess.

The Big Three: pack, shelter, sleep

These three items will be 50 to 70 percent of your base weight, so this is where the math gets real. Cut weight here before you start agonizing over a 12 g vs. 18 g spork.

Pack (target 500 to 900 g / 18 to 32 oz)

If your full load (gear plus food and water) stays under about 12 kg / 25 lbs, a frameless or minimal-frame pack works. Above that, you want a real frame to transfer load to your hips.

  • Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 2400 (~880 g / 31 oz). DCF (Dyneema Composite Fabric), 40 L, full hip belt, external pockets. The default workhorse for thru-hikers who want a real frame and waterproof main body.
  • Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra 50 (~600 g / 21 oz). 50 L with an external carbon arc frame that carries surprisingly well for the weight. Made from Ultra fabric, very abrasion resistant.
  • Pa'lante V2 (~440 g / 15.5 oz). Frameless ~40 L. Lighter loadouts only (under ~8 kg). Iconic bottom stretch pocket.
  • Durston Kakwa 55 (~720 g / 25 oz). Roll-top, frame stays, generous main body for shoulder seasons or resupply-heavy stretches.

Pick by load, not by Instagram. If you cannot get your total starting load (food included) under what the pack is rated for, the pack is the wrong pack. A 15 oz frameless pack loaded to 14 kg / 30 lbs is a worse experience than a 32 oz framed pack carrying it correctly.

Shelter (target 400 to 700 g / 14 to 25 oz)

Trekking-pole tents dominate the ultralight category because you are already carrying the poles. Freestanding tents are heavier for equivalent weather protection, but worth it on hard-packed sites or expected snow camping.

  • Zpacks Plex Solo (~395 g / 13.9 oz). 1P DCF trekking-pole tent. Single wall, ample length for tall hikers, tiny packed size.
  • Zpacks Duplex (~525 g / 18.5 oz). 2P DCF trekking-pole tent. The Appalachian Trail / Pacific Crest Trail standard for solo hikers who want extra room or for two-person trips.
  • Durston X-Mid Pro 1 (~470 g / 16.6 oz). DCF pyramid with two doors, vestibules, and excellent ventilation. Geometry tolerates uneven sites better than most.
  • Tarptent Notch Li (~490 g / 17.3 oz). Double wall DCF, two doors, two vestibules. The choice if you hate condensation more than you love grams.

If DCF is outside your budget, the silnylon and silpoly versions of the X-Mid 1 and Notch are still well under 1 kg and cost roughly a third as much. You give up packed size and lifetime durability, not function.

Sleep system (target 700 to 1,100 g / 25 to 39 oz combined)

Sleep system is bag-or-quilt plus pad plus pillow. Match the temperature rating to the coldest night you actually expect, not the coldest night you can imagine. A 20°F (-7°C) rating is the three-season default in North America.

  • Enlightened Equipment Enigma 20° (850fp) (~570 g / 20 oz, regular/regular). Sewn-footbox quilt; pair with a pad strap kit to seal drafts.
  • Katabatic Gear Palisade 30° (~510 g / 18 oz). Pad-attachment system is unusually good. Excellent for summer and PCT desert sections.
  • Western Mountaineering UltraLite 20° (~820 g / 29 oz). Traditional mummy bag, made in the USA, lifetime build. Heavier than a quilt but warmer at the same fill, and much warmer when wet.
  • Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT, Regular (~370 g / 13 oz). R-value 4.5, the standard three-season inflatable. Crinkly, but you adjust.
  • Nemo Tensor All-Season, Regular (~510 g / 18 oz). Quieter, R-value 5.4 for shoulder-season trips.

Pillow: an inflatable like the Sea to Summit Aeros Premium (~80 g / 2.8 oz) or stuff a puffy jacket into your sleeping bag stuff sack and skip the dedicated pillow entirely. Both are valid.

Clothing (worn + packed, target packed 600 to 900 g / 21 to 32 oz)

Worn weight does not count toward base weight, which is why long-distance hikers wear running shorts and a sun hoody and pack everything else. The packed system has one job: keep you alive when you stop moving.

  • Insulating jacket. Down: Patagonia Micro Puff or Down Sweater, Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer, Cumulus Incredilite. Pick by fill weight, not list weight. 60 to 90 g of 850fp+ down is the three-season sweet spot.
  • Rain jacket. Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite 2 (~170 g / 6 oz) if you accept that it is disposable. Outdoor Research Helium or Montbell Versalite (~190 to 200 g) if you want it to last more than one season.
  • Wind shirt. Patagonia Houdini or Montbell Tachyon (~80 g / 2.8 oz). Optional but punches above its weight. Stops 80 percent of the conditions you would otherwise throw the rain jacket on for.
  • Sleep base layer. Synthetic or merino top and bottom you only wear in the tent. Smartwool, Icebreaker, or Senchi alpha 60/90. Keeps your sleep system clean and gives you a backup if your hiking shirt is soaked.
  • Socks. Two pairs Darn Tough or Injinji liner socks, one worn, one drying or sleep-only.
  • Hat and gloves. Beanie (40 g) and light fleece or wind gloves (40 g). Cheap insurance.

Cooking and water (target 300 to 500 g / 11 to 18 oz)

For most three-season backpacking, the canister stove is hard to beat for the weight. Going stoveless saves about 200 g but changes how you eat. Try it on a weekend before you commit on a thru-hike.

  • BRS-3000T stove (~25 g / 0.9 oz). Tiny, cheap, surprisingly reliable. Sheltered burner on a Soto Windmaster (~60 g) for windy conditions if you can spare the grams.
  • Toaks Titanium 550 ml or 750 ml pot (~72 to 95 g). 550 ml is enough for one-pot meals and coffee for solo. 750 ml gives you breakfast room.
  • Long-handled titanium spoon (~15 g). Reaches the bottom of freezer-bag meals.
  • Lighter, no piezo. Mini Bic. The piezo on the stove will fail in the cold.
  • Sawyer Squeeze (~85 g / 3 oz). Filter standard for North American trails. The Sawyer Micro and Katadyn BeFree are lighter but flow slower or clog faster respectively.
  • Cnoc Vecto 2 L bag (~70 g). The right bag to pair with Sawyer. Better seal and easier to fill than the stock Sawyer pouches.
  • Smartwater 1 L bottles, two (~30 g each, free with the water). Universal threading for inline filtering.

Electronics (target 250 to 400 g / 9 to 14 oz, excludes phone)

  • Headlamp. Nitecore NU25 UL (~45 g / 1.6 oz) or Petzl Bindi (~36 g). Both rechargeable. Skip the AAA Black Diamond unless you need to share spare batteries.
  • Power bank. Nitecore NB10000 Gen 3 (~150 g / 5.3 oz). Best Wh-per-gram of mainstream packs. Anker PowerCore 10000 (~192 g) is the cheaper safe choice.
  • Charging cable and 30W GaN brick. Anker Nano or similar. ~70 g combined for cable plus brick.
  • Garmin inReach Mini 2 (~100 g / 3.5 oz). Subscription required. Worth it for remote terrain or solo trips. Most people who hike without one have not actually needed one yet.
  • Earbuds. Optional. Wired Apple EarPods (~12 g) outlast any AirPods Pro case-and-buds combo for the weight, and keep working when wet.

Misc and the small kit (target 300 to 500 g / 11 to 18 oz)

  • First aid kit. Build your own. Ibuprofen, Imodium, Benadryl, a few Leukotape strips on parchment paper, two safety pins, a small needle, two alcohol prep pads. Total around 60 g. Pre-made kits are 200 g of stuff you will never use.
  • Repair. Tenacious Tape patches, two paperclip lengths of Gear Aid Aquaseal in a contact-lens case, a few feet of Leukotape. ~30 g.
  • Hygiene.Travel toothbrush, mini toothpaste refilled into a Litesmith bottle, dental floss (also doubles as thread), small bottle of Dr. Bronner's, a Deuce of Spades trowel. ~80 g.
  • Wallet and ID.Driver's license, one credit card, a few twenties, paper permit if required. Use a ziplock, not a leather wallet.
  • Trekking poles. Worn weight, not base weight, but worth listing. Gossamer Gear LT5 carbon (~290 g / 10.2 oz the pair) is the ultralight reference. Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z if you want fixed-length tent poles plus trekking poles in one.
  • Sit pad, optional.1/8" closed-cell foam cut to size from a Gossamer Gear ThinLite (~25 g). Pulls triple duty as a chair, a pack frame stiffener, and tent site insulation under cold pads.

What to leave at home

The fastest weight cuts are subtractive. Everything below shows up in beginner packs and almost always comes back home unused after a few trips.

  • Hatchet, fixed-blade knife, multi-tool. A small folding knife or even a fingernail clipper handles every trail task that is not building a log cabin. Save 200 to 400 g.
  • Camp shoes. Trail runners are camp shoes. If they are too wet, sleep barefoot. Save 200 to 400 g.
  • Cotton anything. T-shirts, bandanas, underwear. Cotton holds water, fails to insulate when wet, and dries slowly. Synthetic or merino across the board.
  • Full-size first-aid kit. Prepackaged kits are 80 percent stuff you do not need on a 3-day trip. Build your own around the few things you will actually use.
  • Three changes of clothes. One hiking outfit, one sleep outfit, optionally one town outfit if you are thru-hiking. That is the whole list.
  • Heavy headlamps with AAA batteries. Modern rechargeables weigh half as much and recharge from your power bank.
  • Paper maps and a backup compass for trails with signage every quarter mile. Carry them where they actually matter (off-trail or remote). On a marked long-distance trail with a FarOut subscription, a phone in a ziplock plus a small printout of bailout points is enough.

Test before you commit

The cheapest ultralight gear is the gear you already own. Before you replace anything, do a shakedown weekend with your current kit, weigh every item on a kitchen scale (in grams, ounces lie at low weights), and put the data into a planner. You will almost certainly find 500 to 1,000 g of easy cuts that cost zero dollars. Most people overbuy because they have never seen their current pack on a real scale.

When you do upgrade, replace the heaviest single item first. Going from a 1,800 g pack to a 700 g pack saves more grams than every other change combined, and you only have to do it once.

Adding it up: a realistic sub-10 list

Take the middle of every range above and you land at about 4.3 kg / 9.5 lbs base weight. That is achievable without DCF on every line, and without spending five figures. If you do go DCF on the shelter and pack, the same list lands closer to 3.5 kg / 7.7 lbs.

The 10 lb cutoff is not the goal. The goal is a pack that disappears on your back so you can pay attention to the trail. If your knees hurt at 12 lbs and feel fine at 9 lbs, that is the only ranking that matters.
